Building an attendance policy for shift workers
June 25, 2026 ยท 5 min read
Shift work adds wrinkles a standard 9-to-5 policy doesn't cover: swaps, no-shows that leave coverage gaps, and overnight shifts that cross date boundaries. Your point system should account for them.
Weight coverage-critical occurrences higher
A no-call/no-show that leaves a shift uncovered hurts more than a late clock-in. Reflect that with higher points for the occurrences that create coverage gaps.
Handle swaps clearly
Decide in advance whether approved swaps are neutral (no points) and require them to be documented ahead of time. Undocumented swaps should still count.
Mind the clock and the calendar
- ✓ Set the org time zone correctly for overnight shifts.
