No-call/no-show policy: how to handle it fairly
January 15, 2026 · 5 min read
A no-call/no-show happens when an employee misses a scheduled shift without notifying anyone. Because it's disruptive and hard to plan around, most attendance policies weight it heavily.
Define it clearly
Spell out what counts: how much advance notice is required, who the employee must contact, and by when. Ambiguity is where disputes start.
How many points?
In a point system, a no-call/no-show typically carries the highest single value — often two to three times a normal absence. Some policies treat consecutive no-call/no-shows as automatic termination (commonly three in a row).
Escalate consistently
- ✓ Use the same point value for everyone.
- ✓ Let thresholds trigger the warning automatically.
- ✓ Keep a documented record of every occurrence.
- ✓ Attach any evidence (schedules, messages) to the write-up.
Cloud Point Data lets you set the exact point value for a no-call/no-show, escalate automatically, and keep an immutable record — so the policy is applied fairly, every time.
