Point-based vs. occurrence-based attendance policies

March 19, 2026 · 4 min read

Two common attendance approaches often get confused. Both track absences; they just measure them differently.

Occurrence-based

Every incident counts as one "occurrence," regardless of severity. Simple, but it treats a two-minute tardy the same as a no-call/no-show.

Point-based

Each incident is worth points based on how disruptive it is. A tardy might be a fraction of a point; a no-call/no-show the most. It's fairer and more precise.

Which should you use?

Most modern policies use points because they reflect real-world severity. Cloud Point Data is a point system at its core — but you can make any occurrence worth exactly one point if you prefer the simpler model.
